“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
Here I thought that the cult of ignorance in the USA started with The Simpson’s. Sometime ago I tried to figure out when being stupid became cool. I mean at one point in time being smart and making something of yourself was something to strive for, but somewhere this changed. I had thought that when The Simpson’s, which debuted in December 1989, was this point. Let’s face it when Homer Simpson becomes something of a hero, there is a problem.
But I was wrong, Isaac Asimov noted the Cult of Ignorance in a column in Newsweek in January 1980, almost ten years before the Simpson’s.
Sorry Homer, I thought you were to blame.
