In 2003 GlobalFest exploded on the festival scene in Calgary with it international fireworks competition. Over the next 10 years GlobalFest has expanded and now includes OneWorld Festival, Human Rights and Youth Forums and the Globalfest Night Market.
However the pyrotechnic displays are still the main draw. The event is held in Elliston Park in southeast Calgary, where the fireworks are launched over the lake that makes for spectacular reflections and are accompanied by a musical score. This year’s pyromusical artists were from China, France, Great Britain, the USA and the Finale from Canada.
With July 4th in the USA and Canada Day on July 1st fast approaching I thought this would be a good time to write a short post on photographing fireworks.
If you have never taken photos of fireworks, it might sound like a daunting task, it’s not. Or if you have taken photos of fireworks but they didn’t turn out so well and you are tired of your photos coming out blurry and/or grainy the following tips might help you to take better photos.
Well if you are a Photoshop user there are some changes happening that you might want to be aware of. Adobe has decided to bet the farm that the future lies in digital distribution and subscriptions.
Let me explain, as of May 6, 2013, you will still be able to buy CS6 but it will be only from a 3rd party reseller. You are no longer able to download Photoshop (or any other Adobe product except for Lightroom) and a license to use CS6 from the Adobe website. Adobe has not said when it will stop selling CS6 all together but my suspicion is that as soon as current stock is sold there will be no more copies available at the local Best Buy.
The fact that the new edition of Photoshop and other Adobe products will out in June only confirms my suspicion. So how do you get Photoshop and you other favorite Adobe products, well you get them from Creative Cloud.
Creative Cloud is Adobe’s subscription service that they released just over a year ago and is how Adobe is planning on getting all of its tools in to the hands of designers, photographers, videographers, web developers and audio professionals.
If you are a photographer, illustrator, artist or just a hobbyist with iPhone, let me give you one piece of advice.
DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR PHOTOS TO SOCIAL MEDIA SITES.
In 1979 Bob Marley wrote these words, lyrics in perhaps his best song, Redemption Song.
“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind”
Those words were taken from a speech given by Marcus Garvey in 1937 the full quote from the speech was:
“We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind…”
Although these words spoken 75 years ago, and in reference to a somewhat different struggle I believe they still are relevant today, perhaps more so.
Why? Because you have allowed yourself to become enslaved. [Read more…]
